The Wonderful Mango Fruit

An Indian Folklore Reimagined

A parrot finds a magical healing mango, brings it to his adoptive parents, an elderly poor couple, who gift the mango to their king selflessly. The king plants it to grow a magic mango tree, and feeds the first of its fruit to his old priest to make him younger. However, he dies after eating it and the king is angry that the couple tried to poison him. The parrot is overcome with guilty so he agrees to die as perceived justice. It is later revealed that a snake had bitten that mango on the tree and poisoned it, which is what killed the priest, meaning the parrot was innocent.

Interpretation

moodboard

For stylistic reference, the piece was primarily inspired by the Fable Whisky brand and their angular shapes, subtle motion, and gritty atmosphere.

Initial Styleframes

initial styleframes

My initial styleframes aimed to establish some of the main shots and develop the unifying aspects of atmosphere and shape elements, exploring how to bring up visual interest in composition and motion. Based on feedback on these styleframes, I was able to identify areas for improvement, primarily consisting of more contrast in the light elements and inclusion of some dynamic scenes that break the monotony.

Immersive Experience

mockups

As a culture-based project, it was worth exploring ways to invision a life for the piece, like any good design would have. Perhaps it's a piece projected on a wall for the evening entertainment at a camp, campers sat around the campfire, a cozy nostalgic environment. Or maybe it's a intimate scene of a traditional Indian household in the 2000s watching it in the sun-soaked living room on a weekend morning. Experimenting with the scene around the piece adds an extra layer of consideration for mood and atmosphere, which I believe enhances the work.
